How Do I Locate Stolen Vehicles?

Vehicles that are Abandoned, Ditched behind Vacant Houses, In Alleys or Places that do not normally have vehicles parked at. A lot of times car thieves have there usual spots they park stolen cars at and its pretty easy in some area's to find stolen cars since its all the usual places. How Vehicles Are Recovered?

There is a few methods at my disposal to recover stolen vehicles or assets (trailers, bobcats, etc). I have officers in different districts i am running around in working and also i know most of the district watch commanders. I will either call them, call 911 or see IF any of the officers i know are working. I always stay with the stolen car until a BEAT COP shows up on scene, then I leave.

Check Impound Lots Frequently.

Since the high volume of vehicles and assets in impound lots it might take a LONG time to contact you. What you can do is contact the following impound lot below and ask them to see IF your vehicle or asset is located at the facility, be sure to have the last 6 digits of your vehicle identification number available to give them when you call.

Law Enforcement Calling Victims

Please note that, NOT all CPD Dept Phones have CALLER ID and you will want to answer your phone even thou it says unknown, unavailable or blocked (private) number. I get called back all the time by 911 when a officer arrives on scene to secure a stolen car and the phone number comes up as PRIVATE number. IF on the police report it says to call you and NOT tow vehicle or asset that vehicle or asset will stay right where its at. I suggest you put in your police report to TOW vehicle or asset. For vehicles and assets in the city of chicago that are stolen and recovered in the city of chicago there is ZERO impound fee's or tow fee's.

Do Police Search for Stolen Cars?

Yes ALL of Law Enforcement looks for stolen vehicles, however the police cars with the LPR Readers are the ones who mostly find the stolen vehicles because it sends a HIT to there PDT system. Vehicles are very LOW PRIORITY on the list, So even IF they come across a stolen car IF a more urgent job comes up they will have to leave the vehicle. Its pretty brutal for all parties. I Suggest IF you see a phone call coming in at 1-4am from a blocked, unknown or unavailable number to answer anyways. A lot of CPD Department phones do not have caller ID attached.

Tips to Report Suspected Stolen Car

You wake up and you find a car that magically appears behind your house or a empty lot in your area. I always wait a day or 2 to see IF the vehicle or asset moves, IF it moves and comes back but has a broken back window and or YOU have zero idea who owns the car, none of your neighbors own it and so fourth CALL 911 (not 311) and say hello I would like to report a suspicious auto IF you can give them the license plate # of the vehicle even better. You can always remain anonymous when you call to report the vehicle. Also give them as much data as you can.
